FLIP

Ninety-percent of urban youth in Uganda are excluded from work in the formal sector. They operate in the invisible gig/informal economy, where work and income are inconsistent, there are no social safety nets, and where dealings between youth and businesses are rife with exploitation. FLIP (https://www.flipafrica.app/) founded in Kampala, Uganda in March 2018, is a web-based freelance marketplace that connects youth with short-term work opportunities in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)– many of which operate in the gig/informal sector– with three key objectives:

To make talent and work opportunities in the gig economy visible;
To create accountability in work product and payments in gig work; and
To enable upward mobility amongst gig workers.
